Allium schoenoprasum Rising Star is a compact edible and ornamental chive with an extra-dwarf clump, fine gray-green hollow leaves and abundant lavender-pink flower heads.
It reaches about 25 to 30 cm high and wide. Both leaves and flowers are edible for people, and the leaves carry a mild onion flavor. The rounded spring umbels feed pollinators and brighten containers, herb beds and border edges.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Harvest leaves regularly and remove spent heads to control self-seeding. Chives are toxic to dogs, cats and horses, so keep pets from eating any plant material.
