Aster alpinus Dunkle Schöne forms a low, compact clump with deep purple daisies and yellow centers from late spring into early summer. It fits sunny rock gardens, border fronts, edging, and patio containers, where its small scale keeps paths and neighboring plants visible.
Plant in well-drained chalk, loam, or sandy soil. Water evenly without leaving the roots waterlogged, feed lightly in spring, and deadhead spent flowers before cutting the stems near ground level in late fall. The flowers support bees, butterflies, and other insect pollinators. This plant is reported poisonous and should not be eaten.
