Clematis ‘The President’ is a medium-sized deciduous climber prized for reliable repeat flowering. Single cupped blooms up to 18 cm wide have eight overlapping rich violet purple-blue sepals, silvery reverses and pinkish to deep red stamens. The main display arrives from late spring to early summer, with a second flush from late summer into early autumn, followed by decorative silvery seed heads. Mature plants reach about 1.5-2.5 m high and 0.5-1 m wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moisture-retentive but well-drained alkaline or neutral soil. Keep the crown and roots cool and shaded while training stems onto a narrow support. This Group 2 cultivar suits walls, fences, arches, pergolas, trellises and large containers.
