Salvia Blue Spire forms an upright, bushy sub-shrub about 4 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet wide. White stems carry deeply divided, aromatic gray-green leaves, followed by large branched panicles of small violet-blue flowers from midsummer into early fall.
Plant it in full sun and sharply drained soil, where its drought tolerance suits gravel gardens, dry borders, and Mediterranean-style planting. The foliage provides a clear herbal scent when brushed, while the flowers support pollinators. Cut the old stems back hard in early spring as fresh growth begins.
