Syringa vulgaris Mme Antoine Buchner brings a strong late-spring display to sunny gardens. Dark reddish-purple buds open into large double panicles of soft pink to lavender-pink flowers, combining rich color with a sweet lilac fragrance.
This deciduous shrub develops a broad upright, bushy outline with green heart-shaped leaves and can mature to about 10–16 feet high and 7–13 feet wide. Its flower-filled branches suit a specimen position, an informal hedge, or cutting for indoor arrangements.
Choose full sun or light partial shade and provide moist but well-drained soil. Neutral to alkaline conditions are ideal, and the shrub accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand. Regular water during establishment supports steady growth without leaving the roots waterlogged.
After flowering, remove spent panicles and thin selected older stems while preserving new shoots that carry next year’s buds. Good spacing and air movement help reduce mildew, blight, and canker, while the naturally broad framework needs only measured renewal pruning.
