Acer platanoides Crimson Sentry carries deep red-purple, five-lobed leaves on a dense, narrowly upright crown. Small yellow spring flowers are tinged dark red and stand out against the dark foliage.
The columnar habit provides a strong vertical accent in smaller gardens, urban spaces, and narrow screens. Full sun produces the richest foliage color, while partial shade is also suitable. Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment and dry spells.
Mulch around the base to retain moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Remove dead or poorly placed branches in late summer or winter. This cultivar contains toxic components.
