Nassella tenuissima Ponytails forms an upright tuft of very fine green blades that arch at their tips. Soft cream and light brown plumes rise above the leaves and move easily with the breeze. The airy shape adds texture to gravel beds, patio containers, and naturalistic borders. Its narrow footprint makes it easy to repeat through a flat planting.
Give it full sun and open airflow in well-drained soil. Water while the roots establish, then keep the plant on the dry side. Add only a little compost because rich feeding can weaken the fine habit. Remove dead leaves in early spring, while leaving the seed heads through winter preserves movement. Pests are usually minor, but wet winter soil can cause crown problems.
