Deutzia scabra Plena builds a tall, bushy backdrop for a flowering border or informal hedge. In late spring and early summer, its arching branches carry dense panicles of double white flowers, softly suffused with pale pinkish purple on the outer petals.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It accepts acid, neutral, or alkaline ground and grows in chalk, clay, loam, or sand. Water during dry spells, then prune after flowering to keep the framework open and productive.
The lightly fragrant flowers attract bees and butterflies. Mature foliage is deciduous, and older cinnamon-colored bark peels from the stems.
