Ribes uva-crispa Hinnonmäki Röd forms a vigorous, upright deciduous fruit bush with thorny branches, lobed green leaves, and generous crops of round, dark red gooseberries in midsummer. The juicy berries combine sweet flesh with a pleasantly tart skin and suit fresh eating, preserves, and desserts.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position, using moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water as the fruit swells, keep the root zone free of weeds and grass, and thin the oldest branches annually to maintain a productive, open framework. The cultivar is self-fertile and resists American gooseberry mildew.
