Aster ageratoides Starshine forms a sturdy, spreading mound of deep green foliage and masses of small white daisies with yellow centers. Its compact habit and strong branching create a bright late-season display without needing pinching.
Use this mildew-resistant perennial near the front of a flowering border, in a courtyard container, or through a naturalistic planting. The flowers attract bees and butterflies and provide useful stems for cutting from late summer into autumn.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile soil that drains freely. Keep the ground evenly moist while plants establish. Deadhead untidy flowers, then cut the stems close to the ground and mulch with well-rotted garden compost or manure after flowering. Feed in April if the soil is lean or relatively dry.
