Weigela Bristol Ruby fills the back of a mixed border or develops into a broad flowering hedge. Dark crimson bell-shaped flowers cover its upright, bushy framework in late spring and early summer, standing clearly against simple oval green leaves. The flowers also provide nectar and pollen for bees.
This deciduous shrub accepts full sun or partial shade and a wide range of fertile, well-drained soils. Its mature height and spread allow it to form a substantial screen, so give it room to expand rather than pressing it into a narrow gap.
After flowering, shorten shoots to a strong pair of buds. On established shrubs, remove about one-quarter of the oldest stems at ground level each year to encourage fresh replacement growth. The flowers are unscented, and the exact cultivar has no toxic effects reported for people, cats, dogs, horses, or livestock.
