Electric violet-blue flower heads make Eryngium zabelii Big Blue a strong architectural perennial. Long prickly silver-blue bracts surround each textured head on upright stems. The drought-tolerant clump fits gravel, prairie-style beds, coastal gardens, and cutting plots. Dried heads can remain decorative through winter.
Full sun and dry, free-draining soil support sturdy stems. Water during establishment, then let the ground drain fully between soakings. Avoid rich feeding. Leave seedheads through winter and cut dry stems back in late winter. Sharp bracts and leaves can scratch skin, so wear gloves and place the plant away from busy paths.
