Hydrangea paniculata Phantom is an accepted, award-winning deciduous cultivar bred from seed selections by Peter Zwijnenburg. Its vigorous bushy framework has strong, stiff green stems and ovate green leaves. Immense, dense conical panicles combine creamy-white fertile florets with showy sterile florets, opening with lime-green tints, becoming white, and flushing pink as they mature.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil; sunny positions require reliable moisture. Flowers form on the current season’s growth, so prune in late winter or early spring. Hard pruning can keep the shrub smaller and increase flower-head size, while lighter pruning produces a larger framework. The panicles suit fresh or dried arrangements. Foliage is toxic if eaten and may aggravate skin allergies, so wear gloves and keep pets away.
