Clematis Multi Blue is an accepted Early Large-flowered cultivar selected by J. Bouter & Zoon in the Netherlands in 1983 as a mutation of Clematis The President. This deciduous climber grows about 8 to 13 feet tall and 1.5 to 3 feet wide. Bronze young leaves mature to medium green. Layered blue double flowers about 4 inches across open from May through September and become paler, gray-blue, and silvery with age.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, with a trellis and a cool shaded crown. It suits walls, small gardens, and large patio containers. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring. Handling may irritate human skin. Clematis is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, and the exact cultivar is harmful if eaten by rabbits.
