Lonicera henryi is a vigorous evergreen climber that twines around wires, trellises, pergolas, and other sturdy supports. Dark green lance-shaped leaves form lasting cover, while clusters of dull yellow and red tubular flowers appear in summer. Black ornamental berries follow the flowers. A mature plant reaches about 400 to 800 cm tall and 50 to 100 cm wide.
Grow it in partial shade or full sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. It accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand and acid, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Space plants about 100 cm apart, provide strong support for the twining stems, and do not let the soil dry out.
Trim wayward shoots in late winter to control growth. Propagate from ripe seed or semi-ripe summer cuttings. Watch for honeysuckle aphids, thrips, glasshouse whitefly, powdery mildew, fungal leaf spot, silver leaf, and rare honey fungus. The ornamental berries should not be eaten, so keep fallen fruit away from pets.
