Deep purple foliage gives Physocarpus opulifolius Diabolo a dense, dark backdrop from spring through fall. Creamy white flower clusters, lightly touched with pink, appear in summer. Reddish seed capsules follow, and peeling mature bark becomes visible after leaf drop.
This upright, suckering shrub reaches about 5 to 8 feet tall and wide. It can form a broad hedge or screen and also fits the back of a flowering border. Full sun develops the strongest purple color, while partial shade is also suitable.
Plant in moist but well-drained clay, loam, or sand. Water deeply during the first growing season, then reduce frequency. Feed in spring and prune after flowering to maintain the shape.
