Yucca filamentosa is a stemless broadleaf evergreen that builds strong clumps of blue-green sword-shaped leaves edged with distinctive curling white threads. Tall branched panicles of nodding creamy-white bells rise dramatically above the rosettes from late spring into summer and draw hummingbirds and specialist yucca moths.
Grow it in full sun and freely drained chalk, loam, sand, or rocky soil. Established clumps tolerate drought, heat, poor ground, and salt spray. Remove spent flower stalks and damaged leaves as needed. The sharp leaf tips can cause injury, contact can trigger an allergic skin reaction, and the plant is harmful to dogs and cats if eaten, so wear protective equipment and keep it away from children’s play areas.
