Tilia Platyphyllos is a large Deciduous Tree in the Malvaceae family. A dense Pyramidal crown rises above Gray bark that becomes Furrowed with age, while young Red-Brown twigs are hairy. The directly documented landscape range is about 18.3-24.4 m high and 9.15-15.25 m wide.
Simple Alternate leaves are Cordate to Ovate, with Serrate margins, dark Green upper surfaces, and paler hairy undersides. They turn Yellow in autumn. In June and July, pendent Cymes carry strongly Fragrant Cream-Yellow flowers rich in nectar. Peer-reviewed measurements place individual flower diameter at 1.2-1.7 cm. Strongly ribbed Gray-Green nutlets later hang with leaflike bracts; these are ornamental botanical fruits, not consumer fruit fields in this Tree record.
Grow in Full sun or Partial shade in fertile, Moist but Well Drained soil. Clay, Loam, and Sand are documented, with Neutral to Alkaline pH preferred. Allow about 9.15 m between trees, water during establishment and dry periods, and shelter young growth from cold winds. Established trees tolerate drought, wind, urban conditions, salt spray, and heavy pruning. Remove basal suckers and monitor for aphids, scale, sooty mold, root rot, and honey fungus.
