Lavandula angustifolia Essence Purple makes a compact, rounded mound of aromatic gray-green foliage, topped by abundant purple-blue flower spikes from early summer into early fall. Its tidy outline stays dense through the season, giving borders and edging a crisp structure while the blooms bring fragrance, bees, and butterflies close to paths and patios.
Plant it in full sun and sharply drained soil, where lean, gravelly conditions suit it better than rich, moisture-retentive ground. The evergreen foliage gives the low mound a lasting presence, and established plants need little water. Its restrained size also works well in a roomy container, a rock garden, or a sunny cottage-style planting.
Water regularly during the first growing season, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Deadhead spent spikes after flowering and trim lightly in late summer to keep the mound compact, always avoiding cuts into old wood. The fragrant stems are also useful for fresh or dried arrangements.
