Salix babylonica f. tortuosa makes an architectural small tree whose branches and twigs twist into a distinctive corkscrew pattern. Narrow green leaves curl along the contorted shoots in summer, then fall to reveal the sculptural framework at its winter best. Insignificant yellowish catkins appear in spring.
Give it full sun and consistently moist soil in a spacious lawn, rain garden, or streamside setting. Keep the tree well away from wells, septic systems, pipes, and structures because willow roots can spread aggressively. Fresh or dried stems add graphic form to flower arrangements.
