Passiflora incarnata is a fast-growing native perennial vine with three-lobed green leaves and intricate, fragrant purple-and-white flowers from late spring into early fall.
Tendrils climb trellises and fences while spreading roots create dense seasonal cover. The blooms support bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and ripe yellow maypops can be eaten fresh or made into jelly.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, and remove unwanted suckers regularly. Leaves and stems contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic if eaten; eat only fully ripe fruit.
