Ribes rubrum Rovada is a compact, vigorous deciduous fruit shrub grown for exceptionally heavy late crops. It forms a leafy, upright-to-mounding bush with smooth canes and medium-green, three- to five-lobed aromatic leaves.
Small greenish-yellow spring flowers are followed by long, loose strings of large translucent bright red berries. The tart fruit is easy to pick and suitable for fresh eating, desserts, preserves, juice and other kitchen uses.
Grow Rovada in rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, with good air movement and shelter from drying winds. Mulch the shallow roots, water consistently during fruit development and renew the bush by removing selected old canes while dormant.
