Ramapo rhododendron forms a low, dense evergreen mound covered with small violet-purple flower clusters in mid-spring. Its fine blue-gray to blue-green leaves are aromatic when crushed and keep the compact shrub attractive beyond bloom.
Grow it in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil in full sun or partial shade, with shelter from drying winds. Its small scale suits containers, rock gardens, woodland edges, low hedges, and the front of flowering borders.
Keep the shallow root system evenly moist without waterlogging, mulch with acidic organic material, and avoid overfeeding. Pruning is rarely needed, but dead wood and wayward shoots can be removed immediately after flowering. The plant is harmful if eaten and may irritate skin, so wear gloves and keep it out of reach of pets and grazing animals.
