Viola Cornuta, horned violet, is a low spreading evergreen perennial from the Pyrenees. Creeping and ascending stems form a neat mat of green leaves beneath many small, fragrant, long-spurred flowers in blue, violet, and lavender tones.
Its cool-season display suits border edges, containers, ground cover, cottage gardens, and butterfly gardens. It is botanically perennial but is also commonly grown as an annual or biennial where summers are hot or winters are unsuitable.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich, evenly moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Space plants 30 cm apart, deadhead as needed, and cut back after flowering or during summer heat to keep the mat compact and encourage a later rebloom.
