Its green leaves carry irregular creamy-white edges, then develop purple-red fall tones before dropping to reveal vivid red winter stems. Small yellowish-white flower clusters in spring may be followed by white or blue-tinged berries.
Grow this broad, spreading deciduous shrub in full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. It accepts clay, loam, or sand across acid, neutral, or alkaline conditions. For the brightest young stems, let the plant establish for at least two years, then cut the shoots back hard between late winter and mid-spring.
