Saxifraga arendsii Marto Rose is a compact evergreen alpine perennial that forms a dense, low mat of green, finger-lobed rosettes. Slender stems carry generous clusters of single rose-pink flowers with subtle greenish-yellow centers from spring into early summer.
Its neat mound and long flowering display bring polished color to rock gardens, gravel pockets, edging, courtyards, and small containers. The plant stays modest in scale and combines well with other low-growing alpines without overwhelming them.
Grow Marto Rose in full sun or partial shade in sharply drained loam or sandy soil. Neutral to alkaline conditions suit it, and protection from intense midday sun helps keep the foliage fresh. Water lightly but do not allow the crown to remain wet.
Little pruning is needed. Propagate by seed or from rosettes or basal cuttings, and watch for aphids, slugs, vine weevils, spider mites, thrips, bacterial spot, and botrytis.
