Ribes uva-crispa Captivator is a vigorous gooseberry for productive fruit gardens, with a rounded, upright-to-spreading framework and only a few thorns on young growth. Large berries ripen from reddish tones to deep red-purple in midsummer and offer sweet flavor for fresh eating, preserves, and desserts. A mature shrub typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet high and 3 to 6 feet wide.
Plant in full sun for the best crop, or use partial shade where summers are warm. Choose fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains well, shelter the shrub from strong wind and frost pockets, and keep the root zone evenly moist as fruit swells. Compost and mulch help maintain steady growth without waterlogging.
Prune in winter and summer to keep the center open and renew fruiting wood, removing the oldest weak canes near ground level. The cultivar is resistant to powdery mildew, although good airflow still helps limit leaf spots and other fungal problems. Its self-fertile flowers can set a crop alone, while bee activity and an additional compatible gooseberry may improve fruit set.
