Clematis Romantika is a late large-flowered deciduous climber whose dusky reddish-purple buds open into velvety, almost black stars. Four to six broad tepals surround a contrasting crown of pale yellow anthers.
Grow it on a trellis, fence or through a light-foliaged shrub in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Give the flowering growth sun or partial shade while keeping the deeply planted crown and root zone cool with mulch or low companions.
Flowers are carried on the current season’s growth from midsummer into early autumn. Cut the previous stems hard back to strong low buds before spring growth begins, then tie fresh shoots loosely to a narrow support as they extend.
