Eutrochium maculatum (Atropurpureum Group) Phantom is a compact, upright Joe Pye weed cultivar with strong basal branching. Its purple stems reach about 95 centimetres high, carrying whorls of green serrated leaves across a plant about 55 centimetres wide.
Large terminal compound corymbs open from late summer into early autumn. Their many tubular disc florets mature from red-purple buds to deep pink and purple, and the lightly fragrant heads attract butterflies and other pollinators.
Grow Phantom in full sun or partial shade in organically rich soil that stays moist. It tolerates wet sites and suits borders, rain gardens, large containers, and cutting gardens. Propagate the cultivar by softwood cuttings.
