Twisted branches and a weeping crown give Salix caprea Curly Locks a clear outline even before spring growth begins. Silvery, softly haired male catkins open before the leaves and develop golden yellow anthers, providing an early display and pollen for visiting insects. The grafted crown reaches about 5 to 8 feet high and 4 to 6 feet wide, fitting small gardens and large patio containers.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in deep soil that stays moist but drains well. Green leaves cover the crown through summer, then turn orange and brown before falling. Prune the branches back after flowering to encourage fresh shoots that will carry the next season’s catkins, and water deeply during hot, dry periods.
