Phlomis tuberosa Amazone raises tiered rosy-lilac flower whorls on tall burgundy stems. The upright columns bring clear height to dry borders, prairie-style planting, pollinator gardens, and cut arrangements. Gray-green leaves form a sturdy basal clump beneath the flowers. Mature plants can reach about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
Grow it in full sun or light shade with soil that drains well. Water regularly while the roots establish, then keep the soil on the dry side. Add a modest compost layer in spring only when the soil is poor. Leave the seedheads through fall and winter when their shape is wanted, then cut old stems to the base in late winter or early spring. Divide the plant in spring or grow it from seed. Serious pest and disease problems are uncommon in suitable conditions.
