Rhododendron Cosmopolitan forms a compact, spreading evergreen shrub with long, glossy green leaves. In mid spring, rounded terminal trusses open in pale to dark pink, each broadly funnel-shaped flower carrying a distinctive deep red to burgundy marking on the upper petal. Established plants may flower again lightly in autumn.
Grow it in acidic, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains well. A sheltered position in partial shade protects the foliage and flowers, while annual mulch helps conserve root-zone moisture. Its dense habit works especially well in flowering borders, informal gardens, and hedges. Water during dry weather, feed with an ericaceous fertilizer in spring and after flowering, and remove old flower heads when bloom finishes. The plant is harmful if eaten by people or pets.
