Rhododendron Tortoiseshell Group Tortoiseshell Orange forms a compact, bushy evergreen dome with glossy dark green leaves. Loose clusters of large funnel-shaped flowers blend salmon pink, orange and orange-red in late spring and early summer. Mature plants may reach 150 to 250 cm high and 100 to 150 cm wide.
Grow it in sheltered partial or dappled shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil. An east- or west-facing position suits its preference for gentler light. Apply a leaf-mould mulch each year, water during dry weather, and use ericaceous compost and rhododendron feed for container plants.
This low-maintenance shrub suits woodland borders, flowering beds, courtyards and large containers. Propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or by layering in autumn. All parts are harmful if eaten, so keep plant material away from people and pets.
