Honey-scented cream-white flower spikes open in spring on the compact, rounded branches of Fothergilla intermedia Blue Shadow. The new leaves emerge green, develop a distinctive glaucous blue-green color through summer, and finish in red, orange, and yellow in fall.
Plant it in humus-rich, moist but well-drained acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. Full sun encourages stronger flowering and autumn color. It suits shrub borders, foundation planting, woodland edges, or a low hedge, and may slowly spread by suckers. While the shrub is dormant in late winter or early spring, remove damaged, diseased, or poorly placed stems.
