Amelanchier x lamarckii is a deciduous large shrub or small tree valued for four seasons of interest. Coppery bronze-red young leaves unfold with drooping racemes of small, five-petalled white flowers in spring. Sweet edible berries follow in early summer, changing from red to purple-black and attracting birds.
The finely branched, multi-stemmed plant develops a rounded to broadly spreading crown with smooth gray-brown bark. Green summer leaves turn orange-red before falling. Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained acidic to neutral soil. Water through establishment and during prolonged dry spells. Apply a general-purpose fertilizer or a generous mulch of well-rotted compost in early spring, and prune only lightly while dormant.
