Juniperus squamata Blue Star is a dwarf evergreen conifer with a dense, slow-growing, bun-shaped habit. Short branchlets carry overlapping steel-blue to blue-gray awl-shaped needles in whorls of three, each marked by a pale stomatal band.
Mature shrubs broaden gradually into compact mounds and may produce a few dusky blue berry-like seed cones. The dense foliage usually conceals the scaly brown bark and requires little pruning.
Grow in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil. Water while establishing, allow the soil to dry between later waterings, avoid wet ground, and wear gloves when handling foliage or seed cones.
