Rounded trusses of deep red flowers make Rhododendron Nova Zembla a strong spring feature for an evergreen hedge, screen, or foundation planting. The flowers carry darker spotting and sit above thick, glossy dark green leaves that remain through winter. A mature shrub can reach about 5 to 8 feet tall and wide, creating broad cover without needing a formal clipped shape.
Choose morning sun or partial shade with protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winter wind. Acidic, humus-rich soil should stay evenly moist but drain freely, and a spring mulch helps the shallow roots hold moisture. Remove faded trusses and make any shaping cuts immediately after flowering.
Astilbe and Heuchera fit below the shrub because they also suit moist, partly shaded soil. Their finer plumes and low foliage provide a lighter layer beneath the broad evergreen leaves. All parts are harmful if eaten, so keep plant material away from children and pets.
